I wanted you to know I am coming through the state of Kansas on October 11 with a band the just got signed in EMI. It is called the “Get It Right” tour. We are looking for a place to have an event. Might you or someone you know be game? We bring all the sound and lighting with a tech. and evening usually lasts between 1 1/2 – 2 hours and we have seen much fruit from these events. We usually ask for $2,000 but if you are interested, and can book this I will be able to go down to $1,000 + food for the evening and a place to sleep. This is of course negotiable. Yesterday I went to a seminar taught by Tony Jones, a key thinker of the emergent movement.  He shared “10 Dispatches of the Emergent Movement.”  I thought it was very thought-provoking, yet quite challenging to listen to.  I’m not convinced everything he said is necessary for the rediretion of the Church universal (and my guess is that he would question that as well… hence the term “movement” attached), but worth listening to or reading about.

building youth ministers into youth ministry

Whether you are a paid staff or volunteer, there is a dangerous temptation in youth ministry to take on everything by yourself.

In our churches, there are many of us who have had or currently have that same attitude. Even sadder is that we have many youth leaders who are expected by their church to do it all by themselves. Some have to deal with unrealistic expectations put on them by their senior staff, elder board, etc.

When I first jumped into youth ministry, I had the “lone ranger” mentality. I thought I could do it all myself. The danger with this type of approach is that several things can happen. A few of which are:

• It leads to burnout.
  
• Students fall through the cracks.
  
• One youth leader can’t affectively minister to all the students in the group or community.
  
• You will forget the hot dog buns for the event.
  

You can’t do it all by yourself, and if you do, you’re not only missing out personally, but you are also withholding a blessing from others as well. Believers want to be equipped to serve as God has shaped them. It’s our responsibility to help them discover how they can serve. As believers we have all been called to be ministers and a youth ministry team is much more effective than the lone ranger approach.

Here are some thoughts on how to share some of the responsibilities of student ministry:

Equip – That’s our job, we are to equip the church to do ministry. Help believers learn how God has shaped them to serve. Equip others in the church to serve in youth ministry (see Ephesians 4:11-13).

Entrust – Give the believers in the church the ministry. Hand it off and then trust them to get it done. Resist the temptation to micro-manage.

Enjoy – Enjoy watching the believers in your church grow closer to God as they serve Jesus Christ and the church with the gifts God has given them. Enjoy watching the church reach its ministry potential. Enjoy the relief and the freedom to be the youth minister and enjoy your team of youth ministers. Enjoy more time to do the ministry God has called you to do.
